<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Just when I found my groove again in the studio, we made the decision (a few months ago) to move! Much of my life (kids, grandkids + day job) take place on the other side of town, so living in St. Paul wasn't always making a lot of sense. Besides being tired of the commute, I was missing having green space and really yearning to have a more quiet and peaceful living space. (Living in a building with 66 units has some drawbacks).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">But moving didn't seem imminent until a lovely opportunity to rent/cartake a home of an old friend fell into our lap. Amazingly, we are moving to the burbs! Folks seem startled that we are making such a dramatic change--from a downtown, urban environment to a spot located in a quiet, residential neighborhood. But I couldn't be happier! I am looking forward to having my own peaceful space--with plenty of green space! And I will still have a home studio!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">But there is nothing like a major move to turn your life upside down! And this move comes in the midst of Art Crawl preparation! Life has gotten a little crazy!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So here I am--packing for a move and preparing for Art Crawl! It's a little chaotic, but I welcome the opportunity to open our loft/studio to the public one last time. We have been moving some things to our new space so that we can open the loft up and have more wall space for art! And there's nothing like moving to make you realize how much art you have!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So stop by during the Crawl--check out our space one last time (or maybe for the first time)! There will be new work alongside some of my older pieces. And because we're moving, I will be pricing much of my older work to sell! I always try to offer some affordable pieces and this Crawl, there will be even more affordable work for visitors to purchase!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Here are the details:</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">After working at the museum nearly 3 years, most of my work days are fairly routine. After a while you fall into a certain groove and any job becomes <i>work</i> after a time <i>(For instance, it is a very physically demanding job...</i>.it's not unusual for me to walk over 10 miles a shift). </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: small;"><br />But I really do enjoy my job <i>(most days) </i>and still have plenty of those moments when I feel grateful for a job where I actually get paid to walk around looking at art and helping visitors. That's an incredibly simplified snapshot of my job, but really....<i>how bad can that be? (Just don't ask that question after my 10-hour day!)</i><br /><br />Possibly the best part of the job is getting to see some of the behind-the-scenes stuff that happens at the museum. My favorite time of the day is when we close the museum...when the visitors are gone and the lights have been dimmed til another day. There's something sacred about walking thru the space in that quiet.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">The other night after close, as I was walking off the floor, I turned and saw one of my favorite pieces in a very different light. The gallery lights were dim, but the neon light that is part of this piece was still lit. It made for a stunning sight. This sculptural piece by artist Ernest Whiteman has been a favorite of mine since long before I was a guard. It was just recently re-installed in the <i>Art of the America</i> galleries. I couldn't resist stealing a picture of the piece as it looked in the darkened gallery...and just had to share it with you</span><span style="font-size: small;">.</span></span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Before the BIG Reveal</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It seems like a good time to revive my Museum Monday series--the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (where I work as a guard) is celebrating its 100th birthday in 2015. The museum is planning 52 birthday surprises...one each week of the year. Just 3 weeks in, it has been quite a party so far!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Birthday surprise #3 was a biggie. Museum staff have known for months that throughout the year, we will have three different masterpieces on loan to the museum. (Each one will be on display for 3.5 months--solo, in a small gallery in the first floor lobby). While staff have known about the masterpieces, just a handful of folks know what paintings will be on exhibit or even what artists will be part of this special series. It has been a very well-kept secret!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The BIG Reveal took place last Friday morning,,,and even though I don't work on Fridays I went over to the museum first thing in the morning with my grandson. I was not disappointed.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It is quite a treat to have this lovely Vermeer visiting from the <a href="https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en" target="_blank">Rijksmuseum</a> in Amsterdam. The painting is quite small, but the color, composition, and details are quite exquisite. There are only 34 known Vermeers in existence and you can view this one at the MIA <i>free.</i></span></div>

Art Crawl Prep continues. This afternoon I spent a little time tidying up my studio space. There's still some serious organizing that needs to happen after the Crawl, but I wanted to at least have the space look somewhat presentable. And the afternoon light pouring into the space is incredible. Sitting at my work table, surrounded by all the things that keep the creative juices flowing, I can catch my breath and feel--at least for the moment--that somehow it will all come together.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOpsQq7Nde7PB7iqd78-eDelesi8mhpZit7ADNid24NPLN6AMGvbVLw-yRIN6AEEs0UGZXKXJ4PMEbekY4EbdrsQcmLj4pH0KaK10HRLPoFGsdi-LM0dT4RL434rYGAWySOjNgmCV08nw/s1600/IMG_6189.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOpsQq7Nde7PB7iqd78-eDelesi8mhpZit7ADNid24NPLN6AMGvbVLw-yRIN6AEEs0UGZXKXJ4PMEbekY4EbdrsQcmLj4pH0KaK10HRLPoFGsdi-LM0dT4RL434rYGAWySOjNgmCV08nw/s1600/IMG_6189.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Don't get me wrong--there is still loads to do. But I keep knocking things off my "To Do" list. Today when I needed a quiet activity (while chugging my coffee for some afternoon turbo energy), I got my bookmarks ready. Several years ago when I was visiting the studio of Painter <a href="http://www.mnartists.org/artistHome.do?action=info&rid=150277" target="_blank">Bettye Olson</a>, I picked up a bookmark offered by Bettye that she had made from old cut-up watercolors. Bettye is a remarkable painter, and at 91 she is still active in her painting studio at the Dow Building. I have visited her studio a few times and love hearing her talk about what it was like as a woman artist 60+ years ago! She is a true inspiration and opened doors for women artists to come. (<a href="http://www.mnoriginal.org/episode/427-jon-reischl-phil-mattson/bettye-olson/" target="_blank">MNOriginals</a> did an interview with Bettye a few years ago...you can listen to it <a href="http://www.mnoriginal.org/episode/427-jon-reischl-phil-mattson/bettye-olson/" target="_blank">here</a>.) Anyways, I treasure that bookmark...whenever I come across it I think about Bettye and hope I will be painting as long as her. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgucc5Brxr3ZDr5fuZ8bYUn9R6CQ0Ck-BdVT0CKhC5IUi94OnWJu3SZVxMoqZL08qedNoQ0FuqKCwONfoJvmr6XBiaNH2Xj-sd9YUOejV6t4qxUqw-ZACbrkG90Z4UiVIqXq5E3uPJCqdo/s1600/IMG_6174.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgucc5Brxr3ZDr5fuZ8bYUn9R6CQ0Ck-BdVT0CKhC5IUi94OnWJu3SZVxMoqZL08qedNoQ0FuqKCwONfoJvmr6XBiaNH2Xj-sd9YUOejV6t4qxUqw-ZACbrkG90Z4UiVIqXq5E3uPJCqdo/s1600/IMG_6174.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, I will offer my own bookmarks to Art Crawl visitors (<i>while supplies last</i>). It's a little <i>"thank you" </i>for visiting ... and maybe it will provide inspiration to some other artist. One of the things I most enjoy about Art Crawl is the conversations I get to have with people I might never meet otherwise. Eight years ago when my hubby (then boyfriend) took me to my first Art Crawl, I was overwhelmed walking into the studios/living spaces of other artists. I was too timid to really talk to anyone. But I did come to realize that the artists that opened their doors welcomed the opportunity to talk about their art. Selling art is always nice (<i>and appreciated!!!</i>), but it's the conversations with visitors that keep me doing this each year.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, Art Crawl is now just 3 days away! The weather forecast looks great! And for the first time, Art Crawl visitors can ride the light rail to the Crawl (the last stop is just a few blocks from my studio). On Saturday and Sunday, you can even ride free. Here's the link to <a href="http://www.stpaulartcrawl.org/parking-bus" target="_blank">parking and light rail info: http://www.stpaulartcrawl.org/parking-bus</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b><span style="color: #741b47;">I hope you can make it to the Art Crawl. And please, stop by and say "hi"!</span></b></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">With Art Crawl less than a week away, I am living in a State of Overwhelm. No amount of sleep seems to reduce the feeling of overwhelm. I keep working with determination and more than a bit of anxiety to prepare for Art Crawl.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Complicating things, a month ago I convinced my hubby to totally re-arrange/re-organize our loft--which is located in a converted warehouse that functions as live/work space for artists. I moved my studio into the main living area, in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows (the windows are located where the warehouse dock once was located). I had a similar set of windows in my former studio space, but moving my studio space gave me a bit more space to work in and a more open feeling that I was after. (My hubby took over my old studio space for his work space). I don't know...it was more work than I intended (sort of like moving) and I'm not nearly as settled as I would like to be (boxes, boxes, boxes everywhere!)...but somehow mixing things up like this is energizing as an artist. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><i>So...</i>I'm not feeling quite as ready for Art Crawl as I would like. I'm still organizing things, arranging art...it's the sort of crazy mayhem that typically precedes Art Crawl. Throw in that next week my hubby is having his sixth eye surgery and you might get an idea of the sort of panic I'm feeling.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I was venting to a good friend and co-worker this morning, and said, <i>"Why do I do Art Crawl? It's over a month into the new special exhibit at the MIA, with less than a month left to experience this extraordinary exhibit. Summer shows are generally slower at the museum (<i>folks in Minnesota want to be outside!</i>), but you really shouldn't miss this one. It features a wide range of original works on paper. Because works on paper are more vulnerable to exposed light...they are not generally shown in the galleries for extended periods of time. And don't let the title (<i>Marks of Genius: 100 Extraordinary Drawings</i>) fool you...it is not just drawings, but watercolors, gouaches and pastels. It covers work from the Middle Ages to contemporary. <i>And there is a lot of color!</i></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
But perhaps my favorite piece in the exhibit is Jim Dine's San Marco with Meissen Figure and the Buddha. First off, it is huge...and colorful...and full of marks. This "drawing" is comprised of two large pieces of paper, with several smaller pieces of paper added in a collage/mixed media affect. The piece is a mix of watercolor, oil paint, pastel and more... with the artist's marks clearly evident. I love seeing the paint drips, tears, and abrasions created by the artist's hands. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This is a post that I intended to write weeks, if not months, ago. For the past several months in my job as a gallery guard I've been fortunate to take part in a pilot program where select guards were trained to "engage" more with museum visitors about the art (thus, we were nicknamed "engagement guards"). As engagement guards we received training about the art in the current <a href="http://new.artsmia.org/sacred/" target="_blank">Sacred Exhibit</a> ending this coming Sunday, July 13th.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The Sacred Exhibit includes art, pulled from the MIA collection, in ten different galleries--with each gallery designed around a different theme inspired by the word "sacred". The art represents different cultures, time periods, and mediums. The exhibit is rich in content.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheL4SjcbAUxz0LvJqJbs0NvZhI5vXcCwBHcYihCs1QZhrh5pP9_WJU8huzVg2EtQxg6FVJsjU167Qzwrr_qyxfD1n-GxZgoE9cBbC7xulXFVcCvIEzv4NuyesK28kxqoZYvGubbXFq_WQ/s1600/IMG_2762.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheL4SjcbAUxz0LvJqJbs0NvZhI5vXcCwBHcYihCs1QZhrh5pP9_WJU8huzVg2EtQxg6FVJsjU167Qzwrr_qyxfD1n-GxZgoE9cBbC7xulXFVcCvIEzv4NuyesK28kxqoZYvGubbXFq_WQ/s1600/IMG_2762.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Beyond a doubt the piece that I've talked about the most about is <a href="https://collections.artsmia.org/index.php?page=detail&id=115836" target="_blank">Do Ho Suh's <i>Some/One </i></a>located in Gallery 263 in the <a href="http://new.artsmia.org/sacred/profane/" target="_blank">Sacred: Profane</a> gallery. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><i>Some/One </i>certainly grabs your attention. It's dramatic and pulls you in to take a better look. In fact, I can't tell you how many times I've seen visitors on their hands and knees to take a better look...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZiH_AxIdkJuaXFoAiTOyARuPx1mkDnDGfLJYNzi60TrfI5s1r3QMcfFll0McUOiR8uBRVEoLwNdQnlfDjYRohMcfBQ4rPWWPjj31Uq6zNbQvl7v8iJ1eDK0jSKYN4GF_MY3JbH8envpg/s1600/Do-Ho-Suh-SomeOne-2004_dyrmdaily17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZiH_AxIdkJuaXFoAiTOyARuPx1mkDnDGfLJYNzi60TrfI5s1r3QMcfFll0McUOiR8uBRVEoLwNdQnlfDjYRohMcfBQ4rPWWPjj31Uq6zNbQvl7v8iJ1eDK0jSKYN4GF_MY3JbH8envpg/s1600/Do-Ho-Suh-SomeOne-2004_dyrmdaily17.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Yup, this coat/armor is made of soldier dog tags. No, they are not from actual soldiers--for legal/logistical reasons, the artist made his own dog tags. They do not contain names or personal info. Do Ho Suh has made at least five different variations of this piece, each of them spectacular. The MIA is fortunate to have <i>Some/One </i>as part of their permanent collection. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I could tell you much more about this piece (like there is somewhere in the neighborhood of 12,000 dog tags used for this piece...or...that it started out as an art school project to create a garment about identity)... and I would also love to talk with you about some of the other fascinating work Do Ho Suh has done...but you will have to do that research on your own. You won't be disappointed.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3j6s_7T8EmGnk3Sh5tpguaUs0hCwcMHJNTp2_uz4zwtXIInYAcLuPqgBnBhfVj0yK2hDhvD-EmaKac6l-tqV3klxisXjHjqYU6BcIl9HHabiBfrJzoKXVy1nl1ej98BJQ3NbFf5nB010/s1600/IMG_2761.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3j6s_7T8EmGnk3Sh5tpguaUs0hCwcMHJNTp2_uz4zwtXIInYAcLuPqgBnBhfVj0yK2hDhvD-EmaKac6l-tqV3klxisXjHjqYU6BcIl9HHabiBfrJzoKXVy1nl1ej98BJQ3NbFf5nB010/s1600/IMG_2761.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">But the other piece in the Profane gallery is equally profound and doesn't get nearly the same attention. It is <a href="https://collections.artsmia.org/index.php?page=detail&id=1244" target="_blank">Henry Moore's </a><i><a href="https://collections.artsmia.org/index.php?page=detail&id=1244" target="_blank">Warrior with a Shield</a>. </i>Henry Moore created this piece following the conclusion of World War II. Moore had served during World War I and was injured in a gas attack. During WWII he served as a war artist and created dramatic images of folks staying in the underground tunnels of London during bombing raids.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Henry Moore has always been one of my favorite sculptors and working this exhibit has given me the opportunity to study up on Moore a bit more. While talking to visitors in the galleries I have been dismayed at how many visitors, especially those under the age of 30, are not familiar with Moore's work. Henry Moore was an English sculptor that at the height of his career was arguably the most popular sculptor in the world. He is most well-known for his somewhat abstract and curvaceous sculptures of reclining female figures or mother-and-child figures, such as <i><a href="http://www.artsconnected.org/resource/91435/5/reclining-mother-and-child" target="_blank">Reclining Mother and Child</a></i> that can be viewed in the Walker's Sculpture Garden.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Moore's <i>Warrior with Shield </i>was his first effort to create a solo male-figured sculpture. Moore attempted to create a figure that while wounded was still defiant. Judging by the reaction of veterans and others that view this profound sculpture in the gallery, I would say he succeeded. In my research, I found <a href="http://www.henry-moore.org/works-in-public/world/uk/birmingham/birmingham-museum-and-art-gallery/warrior-with-shield-1953-54-lh-360" target="_blank">this excellent commentary by Moore on the creation of the piece</a>. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The Sacred Exhibit closes this coming Sunday, July 13th. These two pieces are part of the museum's permanent collection, but I am not certain that they will be exhibited together in the same manner. While they are certainly pieces that are powerful in their own right, there is no disputing the power of the two together in one gallery, especially with such dramatic lighting.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I have been playing with my watercolors; utilizing little bits of time I have free while the boy (my grandson) sleeps or quiet time before or after work. I think I need more of these sunny ones.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This morning I started playing with the blues. I think all the rain we've had the past few days was a bit of an influence. Plus I wanted to play with my new QoR tubes of Indigo and Paynes Gray. (I also used my Schmincke watercolors) </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There's something about the process of painting these that makes it hard to stop. The process is very meditative. I usually work on 2-4 at a time--it's more efficient that way. I start by making "marks" (aka brushstrokes) in lighter hues across the paper in a somewhat random pattern. </span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I will continue playing around with these, experimenting with different color combos and possibly larger paper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But the real question I keep asking myself as I do these--</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What else could these become?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love playing with the color and pattern on paper...and frankly, I enjoy looking at pieces like this...but I am wondering could these pieces of color and pattern be something more? What would these look like printed on fabric? Made into a scarf? Or a tote bag? What about throw pillows? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm not sure how to go about this, but I might do a little investigation. If you have any tips or thoughts about this possible project, please let me know! Comments are always appreciated!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Tonight was the first night this week that I was actually home. I even had the house to myself! As soon as my hubby was gone, I rushed right into the studio to play with my new watercolors--a perfect evening in my book! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of <a href="http://www.goldenpaints.com/" target="_blank">Golden Paint's</a> new line of watercolor paints--called</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span><a href="http://www.qorcolors.com/" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;" target="_blank">QoR</a><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> (pronounced Core)</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">-to arrive at my favorite local art store, </span><a href="http://www.wetpaintart.com/" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;" target="_blank">Wet Paint</a><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">. The paints arrived earlier this week and I bought a few tubes to play with--including the colors Sap Green, Transparent Pyrrole Orange, and Permanent Alizarin Crimson. (I intended to buy one of the introductory sets of colors, but they were not in yet. Trust me, I will be back for more!)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">First, I took a 6"x6" piece of watercolor and divided it into 2"x2" sections. My goal was just to play around a bit and get the feel for these watercolors. I also decided to just paint with the crimson and orange colors.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I jumped around from square to square; sometimes working wetter, but also experimenting with a drier brush at times.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The more I kept working, the more I liked leaving some white; I think it made the color "pop" more. Also working with a somewhat drier brush at times gave a greater sense of depth and texture. I LOVE Golden colors and these watercolors did not disappoint. The colors are quite vibrant and intense. I think the feel of working with these Golden watercolors will feel a great like working with Golden acrylics. So I am very anxious to pick up more colors and do more painting!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">When I was all done, I cut up the paper to create 9-mini watercolors. Not sure what I'm going to do with these miniatures, but I think there will be more coming soon!</span></div>

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">As some of you might know, my day-job is working as a gallery guard at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (in short, known as "The MIA"). I love my job--I get to spend my work day in my favorite museum in the city. Plus I get paid to look at art! Well, it's a bit more involved than that, but still it's a good gig.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Normally, the museum is closed to visitors on Mondays. Today I am actually going in to work for an evening event for members. But before I head in, I thought I'd kick off a new Monday feature on my blog: Museum Monday. From time to time--on a Monday, I will feature a favorite artwork or artist or even gallery from The MIA. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This week's feature is a painting titled <i>Savanna </i>by artist Urban Couch. This painting was recently hung on the 3rd floor. Initially I was a bit upset when I saw the painting, because it was hanging in the location of one of my favorite paintings (by Pat Steir). But then I took a closer look and fell in love. I have never heard of Urban Couch...and that's the sort of name you wouldn't easily forget. The painting was completed in 1962 and acquired by the museum in 1964 (although I don't remember ever seeing it on the floor before). It is fairly large--60 x 72 inches.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I did some research online on Urban Couch, but couldn't really find much. He was an American painter--Native American (of Cherokee descent) born in 1927 and died in the early 2000's (couldn't actually find the date of his death). He was an art professor and dept chair at West Virginia University. I could find no images of his work, other than the other work that the MIA owns (but it is only available to view online).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So that's what I know, which isn't really all that much...but really matters is that I love this painting and I hope it stays on the floor for a very long time. I love the colors that don't seem like they go together, but do. I love the movement and energy, the boldness and yet simplicity. This photo was simply taken with my iphone (when I was off-duty)...and it certainly doesn't do the work justice. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I think you need to stop by the museum to see it in person...any day but Monday, that is. </span></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwRiRI9JSfhLngGOQVPuWDIq_A7YiV7tbUlWhC3-XefBRFYcF1W5ZGhr8qMe0k7y8YkijRkGKOkA9co-FGnWqrC071r3hj1_Qc7gGpmuRnV8zfJuZ7DDmLGa_5R2OVxx_oXEjx3pk6KYk/s1600/IMG_2645.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwRiRI9JSfhLngGOQVPuWDIq_A7YiV7tbUlWhC3-XefBRFYcF1W5ZGhr8qMe0k7y8YkijRkGKOkA9co-FGnWqrC071r3hj1_Qc7gGpmuRnV8zfJuZ7DDmLGa_5R2OVxx_oXEjx3pk6KYk/s1600/IMG_2645.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I enjoyed a full day in the studio today...something that hasn't been happening very often lately. I continued working on my new spring paintings. Yesterday was the easy part--painting backgrounds. I really had a good time working with some new colors, including this very pale blue color. Today I moved on to the mid-stage of the painting--which is always much harder than the beginning. It also seems to go much slower in reality than how it progresses in my imagination. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The mid-stage of a painting is often a love/hate stage. With one stroke of the brush you love it and think you're brilliant. With the next stroke you hate it and think you ruined the whole thing. I have learned to push thru those feelings, but I often wish it would go as quickly and smoothly as it does in my imagination.</div>

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This winter has been brutal. Fifty days of temps that have fallen below zero. At the beginning of winter I enjoy the beauty of falling snow, but after a while even that gets old. The last snowstorm put it over the top for me. I am tired of driving on ice-rutted roads. Tired of wearing long johns trying to stay warm. Tired of the gray.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">My color palette is often influenced by the seasons. I</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">n the winter </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I tend to paint with a lot of Payne's Gray--the color of our January skies. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">But I'm done with the gray.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Today I started painting a series of abstract "spring" paintings. I have the <a href="http://www.stpaulartcrawl.org/" target="_blank">Spring Art Crawl</a> in mind (April 25-27). Regardless of what the weather is outside, I'm sticking to this lighter, spring-influenced color palette. I'm talking light blues, pinks, orange, sap green, peach...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I feel warmer already!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><i>(Pictures of new work in progress coming soon!)</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I am trying to jump back into blogging/writing about my work, my life as an artist... It is something that fell to the wayside many months ago. Life gets busy and things are neglected or at least, put aside until there is more time. But in reality there is <i>never more time. </i>Life shifts, priorities are rearranged and you give it another go. <i>And that is where I am.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I am not certain how successful I will be at writing on a consistent basis, but I know I miss writing. It's been in the back of my mind for months, and I realize it is a part of my process. And if anyone is interested in what I write, <i>hooray </i>for that!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I am still a painter, juggling a life that includes a paying job to pay the bills...along with all my other roles--wife, friend, mother, and now <i>grandmother. Life is grand! </i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">But crazy busy! I've been finding little bits of time here and there to work in my studio. My studio, however, has been a complete disaster for months...to the point where it was interfering with my creative process. In the past few days I've made some serious headway in organizing/cleaning my studio. It is always an ongoing process really, but I felt good enough this afternoon to sit down and do some new work. </span></div>
